I'd give a different definition of PC. PC is the attitude that
there are certain 'correct' positions and beliefs that are so
important and so cherished that dissent is not allowed and anyone
attempting to challenge these beliefs is automatically discredited.
This is not a new phenomena - it is merely a new name for the
current instantiation of an old phenomena. In the 20's, the KKK was
PC. In the 50's, MacArthyism was PC. Now, quotas, reverse
discrimiation, and male-bashing are PC. In the 50's,
'Anti-Americanism' and 'communism' were the labels PC adherents used
to discredit their opposition. In the 90's, it is 'bigotry' and
'sexism'.
And, as in the 50's, this PC extremism is rooted in genuine problems
- but then the extremism to eradicate the problems become more of a
problem than the problems it is trying to solve.
